Toyota has officially confirmed the return of its iconic sports car, the Celica, nearly two decades after its discontinuation. The announcement was made during a public event at Toyota Stadium, held in conjunction with Rally Japan, where Toyota’s Executive Vice President, Yuki Nakajima, revealed the company’s plans.

The Celica, first introduced in 1970, was a staple in Toyota’s lineup for over three decades, earning acclaim for its performance and design. Production ceased in 2006, leaving enthusiasts longing for its return. Speculation about a revival has persisted, with recent hints from Toyota’s in-house anime series, “Grip,” which featured a whiteboard listing future models, including a “Celica Mk8.”

While specific details about the new Celica’s design and powertrain remain under wraps, there is speculation that it may feature a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, potentially delivering up to 400 horsepower. This aligns with Toyota’s recent developments in high-performance engines designed to accommodate both electrification and alternative fuels.

The anticipated timeline suggests that a prototype of the new Celica could debut as early as the 2025 Tokyo Auto Salon, with a production model potentially hitting the market by 2027.

Toyota’s confirmation of the Celica’s return reflects its commitment to reviving beloved models and catering to sports car enthusiasts. As more information becomes available, fans eagerly await the Celica’s modern incarnation, hoping it will uphold the legacy of its predecessors
